Starter Motors for chevy engines.
Most Chevrolet V8 petrol engines have flywheel ring gears with either 153 or 168 teeth. Staggered nose starters are generally, [not always] for 168 tooth ring gears, and straight are generally, [not always] for 153 tooth ring gears. These starters cannot be bolted straight on, they must always be checked first for depth of mesh, to see if shimming is required. This is explained on the next page. Incorrect shimming can cause a "broken nose". Always use the rear support stay, as this can help avoid a "broken nose", and it also provides a more positive earth. Some engines were fitted with a "metric" nosed starter starting around 1982. Check the following page for information on this nightmare!

High Torque Mini-Starters

These gear reduction starters, provide far more torque than the std unit. The Enforcer is smaller & lighter, and can be turned through 360 degrees. All 3 models need a ”straight” bolt pattern. 153/168 ring gears ok. With mounting bolts & shims.
Before you buy one of these starters, check the following dimension accurately on your engine. The distance between the centreline of the two mounting bolts and the front face of the flywheel ring gear should be between .910” and 1”. Otherwise, these starters will not work. [the pinion should engage 1/2 to 2/3 the way across the ring gear]. Check the shimming information on the next page.
